This is a precaution on the property manager's part to assure than you have good credit and determine your likliehood to pay the rent on time. Property managers will want to be sure than you can afford to pay the rent. They'll want to know where you work and how much money you make. Some of them are going to see if the rent on the property is greater than 30% of your gross income. If its a lot larger than that don't be surprised if your application for rental is refused because you are considered to be at risk to make the monthly payments.

The best attitude to take is to consider the viewpoint of the property owner. Their concern is that you will be able to pay the rent, that you have a history of paying the rent and that your past history indicates you are good renter who does not damage or abuse the property rented.
